In a strategic move to address their quarterback dilemma following Kirk Cousins' season-ending injury, the Minnesota Vikings have struck a deal to acquire Joshua Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals, as confirmed by sources to ESPN.
In exchange for Dobbs and a conditional seventh-round pick, which has the potential to upgrade to a sixth-rounder depending on Dobbs' performance in Minnesota, the Vikings are sending a sixth-round pick to the Cardinals, according to information from ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Cardinals had Dobbs at the helm due to Kyler Murray's absence following his ACL injury from the previous season. Dobbs started in the first eight games of the season for the Cardinals, amassing 1,569 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. Unfortunately, the Cardinals have struggled this season, with a 1-7 record.
Kirk Cousins' season came to an abrupt end after a torn Achilles injury during the Vikings' triumph over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. In his absence, rookie Jaren Hall took over the quarterback duties at Lambeau Field on Sunday, completing 3 of 4 passes for 23 yards but losing the ball on a sack.
The Vikings have managed to secure three consecutive wins, bringing their record to 4-4. Cousins, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, was having a standout season, tying for the NFL lead with 18 touchdown passes, throwing for 2,331 yards, and being intercepted just five times.
Cardinals' coach Jonathan Gannon announced on Monday that Dobbs would not start in the upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns. Instead, Arizona plans to start rookie Clayton Tune. However, Gannon also noted that there's a possibility that Kyler Murray may return as he continues to progress in his recovery from ACL surgery. The timing of Murray's comeback to the field will be determined more by the Cardinals' decision than their opponent. Murray's 21-day practice window after being designated to return from the physically unable to play list is set to close on November 8, just days before the Cardinals host the Atlanta Falcons.
